Howdy folks! I’m back with another vanlife adventure, this time in the majestic Superstition Mountains of Arizona.
Located just outside of Phoenix, this area is a hidden gem packed with natural beauty, legends, and endless outdoor activities.
Where to Stay
There are a few campgrounds right in the heart of the mountains that are perfect for vanlifers. I stayed at Lost Dutchman State Park which has electric and water hookups nestled among the saguaros. Make sure to reserve in advance as sites fill up. Dispersed camping is also allowed on most BLM land here. I found a great free spot off the Peralta Canyon trail with epic mountain views.
Things to Do
Hiking is a must to fully experience the Supes! Some of my favorite trails were Peralta/Cave Trail, Treasure Loop, and Bluff Springs Loop. The scenery is just breathtaking with sheer cliffs, hoodoos, and saguaro forests. Go prepared with plenty of water. Off-trail exploring is fun too but watch for snakes and cacti!
For some history, check out the Superstition Mountain Museum in Apache Junction. And you can’t visit without hearing the legend of the Lost Dutchman’s gold mine. I joined a jeep tour that took me to key sites related to the myth – it was a blast!
Where to Eat
The small town of Apache Junction has a few great spots to refuel after your adventures. My top picks were Prospector’s Brewery for burgers and beer with mountain views, Rancho Bar & Grill for Mexican food on the patio, and Big E’s for satisfying breakfast sandwiches and coffee to fuel up before hitting the trails.
I feel so recharged after spending time enjoying the natural beauty and wide open spaces here.
The Superstition Mountains are a perfect playground for hikers, mountain bikers, photographers, or anyone looking to get off the grid. Hope you all get a chance to visit soon! Safe travels!
