At every gas up opportunity we got swarmed by curious fellow travelers…
Greetings from beautiful Pancake Bay on Lake Superior! We recently had the joy of spending a week exploring this tucked away spot in northern Ontario. If you love nature, lakes, and escaping the crowds, put Pancake Bay on your vanlife roadtrip list!
Where to Stay
There are a few campgrounds right on the shores of Lake Superior to choose from. We stayed at the Pancake Bay Provincial Park which has both electric and non-electric sites, clean facilities, and gorgeous views of the lake. Backcountry camping is also allowed if you want to really immerse yourself in nature.
Things to Do
Pancake Bay is all about getting outside and enjoying the pristine landscape. Hiking along the Superior Coastline Trail was breathtaking with its jagged rock cliffs, pebble beaches, and crashing waves. Renting a kayak is a must to fully experience the lake – don’t forget your camera for that crystal clear water! In the evenings, build a fire and relax on the beach watching the fiery sunsets.
For food and supplies, the tiny town of Heron Bay is just 16km away. Stop by the famous Sea Gull Restaurant for fresh lake fish. We also loved walking the beach and finding smooth colored stones and agates – I ended up with a pocket full of treasures!
Where to Eat
Since Heron Bay is so small, I recommend stocking up on groceries and cooking at your campsite. Eat al fresco and enjoy the views! We grilled up local walleye and veggies most nights. If you want to eat out, the Voyageur Lodge has a nice pub menu with pizzas, burgers, and of course, pancakes!
Pancake Bay exceeded my expectations with its rugged natural beauty and peaceful surroundings.
We could have easily spent a few more weeks here exploring Superior Provincial Park. If you love the outdoors, definitely put this area high on your vanlife itinerary!
Safe travels, friends!
