Greetings from Rocky Point!
We recently spent a wonderful week in this seaside town in Sonora, Mexico and wanted to share some insider tips for other vanlifers and digital nomads thinking of visiting.
Rocky Point is a perfect destination if you’re searching for some beach time, small town charm, and outdoor adventures. Located on the Gulf of California about 3.5 hours south of the Arizona border, it has a laidback, vacation vibe and slower pace of life.
Where to Stay
We stayed at the Sandy Beach RV Park situated right on the gorgeous tan sand beach. Nothing beats waking up to the sound of waves and being steps from swimming in the sea! There are full hookups available along with nice amenities like a pool, laundry, and small store. Free camping is permitted on most of the beaches too if you’re self-contained.
Things to Do
Start your days walking or jogging along the long stretch of beach. The sunrises here are spectacular! Visit Old Port for shopping, dining, and people watching in the central plaza. Check out Playa Encanto Beach for snorkeling and kayaking. Go on an ATV tour through the desert countryside for amazing scenery and adrenaline. Tour the famous Malecon boardwalk in the evenings when it really comes alive with vendors, bars, music, and fun carnival rides. Don’t miss the Thursday night art walk.
Where to Eat
Some of our favorite spots were Baja Mar Seafood for their fresh ceviche and fish tacos, Tacos Y Mariscos Mi Gusto for awesome shrimp and mango tacos, and Charly’s Rock for nightlife, live music, and yummy late night pizza. El Capitan on the Malecon has amazing views, potent margaritas, and satisfying Mexican fare.
Rocky Point has so much to offer travelers – amazing beaches, friendly locals, lots of nature, and a lively town. I hope these tips help you make the most of your visit. Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions before your trip! Happy travels!
